South Africa vs Mauritius digital nomad visa

South Africa and Mauritius are Africa's two serious nomad plays, and they could hardly be more different in philosophy. South Africa's digital nomad visa (2024) sets a high bar — ZAR 1 million a year, about €3,045 a month — but grants up to three years, the longest African permit on this list, in a country with world-class cities, wine regions, and safari weekends. The catch is tax: stays over six months trigger SARS registration, and South Africa will want its cut. Mauritius's Premium Visa asks far less (€1,380 a month), costs nothing to apply for, exempts your foreign income from local tax entirely, and hands you a tropical island with some of Africa's best infrastructure — but the permit is one year at a time and the island is small enough to feel it after a while. So it's mainland scale versus island ease, high bar versus low bar, three years versus one. This page compares the money, the tax traps, and the lived experience.

Our verdict: Mauritius for the easy year, South Africa for the base

Choose Mauritius if you want the frictionless tropical year. The €1,380/month bar is the lowest in Africa, there's no application fee, foreign income isn't taxed locally, and the island's infrastructure (internet, healthcare, flights) is genuinely excellent. It's the closest thing to a plug-and-play nomad visa on the continent.

Choose South Africa if you're thinking in years, not months. The three-year permit is unmatched in Africa, Cape Town may be the best-value great city in the world for remote workers, and the ZAR 1M bar, while high, buys real long-term optionality. Just register with SARS on time and take tax advice — the six-month trigger is the thing people get wrong.

The honest summary: one great year, Mauritius. A multi-year African base, South Africa. Don't pick South Africa for a short stint — the tax registration alone isn't worth it.
