Digital nomad taxes, explained
The visa gets you in. The tax code decides what you keep. Here's how tax residency works for remote workers, which programs are genuinely tax-friendly, and what a $100,000 income costs you in each of the seven regimes we model.
The 183-day rule (and its exceptions)
Most countries consider you tax resident if you spend more than 183 days there in a year — or if your “center of vital interests” (home, family, habits) sits there. A digital nomad visa makes you legal, not tax-exempt: once resident, your worldwide income is generally taxable locally, minus whatever treaties and special regimes apply.
The genuinely friendly regimes are specific carve-outs: the UAE's 0% income tax, Croatia's nomad exemption, Greece's 50% cut for seven years, Spain's Beckham Law flat 24% for six years. Everything else is standard progressive taxation — Portugal's old NHR deal is closed to new entrants, a fact many outdated guides still get wrong.

Do digital nomads pay tax in the country they live in?
Usually yes, once you become tax resident — most countries use the 183-day rule. A nomad visa gives you the right to live somewhere; it doesn't exempt you from that country's tax system. Some programs (UAE, Croatia's one-year exemption) are the exceptions, not the rule.
Which digital nomad visa has the best tax deal?
The UAE taxes qualifying residents at 0% on income. In Europe, Croatia exempts nomads from local income tax for the visa's duration, and Greece offers a 50% reduction for 7 years. Spain's Beckham Law gives a flat 24% rate for six years — excellent for high earners.
Do Americans still pay US tax while on a digital nomad visa?
Yes. The US taxes citizens on worldwide income wherever they live. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion covers roughly $130,000 of earned income a year (2026), and the Foreign Tax Credit offsets taxes paid abroad — but you still file every year.
Can I just stay less than 183 days and pay no tax anywhere?
In theory, perpetual-traveler setups exist; in practice they're fragile. Your home country may still claim you via residential ties, and banks, visas and insurance all want a tax residency somewhere. Get professional advice before attempting it.
